Satellite Party |
Story and photos by Matt Schwenke In a surprise, free performance announced only the night before, Perry Farrell, with his new band Satellite Party and supporting act Mink, brought music to the streets of Milwaukee's east side Thursday for an early afternoon gig in the parking lot of Beans & Barley (prior to a headlining spot at at the Pabst Theater)."You all ready to feel good?" asked Farrell, as he took the stage and sipped a cup of local brew. The hundred or so people who had gathered at the start resounded "aye." Proclaiming he is out to help beautify and heal the world through his new feel-good act in a recent interview as well as toying with the idea of taking Lollapalooza across the pond, Farrell's performance was at least one small step toward that goal as a mix of children, elderly, college kids, music dorks and business folk in suits stopped to enjoy the music for, at the very least, a break from monotony. In a half-hour set, Farrell and company most notably belted out the Jane's Addiction instant classic "Been Caught Stealing," which Farrell still sings with surprising passion, and the Porno For Pyros' island journey "Tahitian Moon" before handing over the stage to New York City rockers Mink. While a healthy portion of the crowd stuck around for another half-hour of music, so did Satellite Party, and Farrell proved to be rather approachable and thankful to his fans as he posed for pictures and autographed numerous items, including a guitar and, yes, even a breast. Rock 'n' roll surely isn't dead, but can Farrell reawaken hearts on a global scale? |
