It may have been a minute (or many) since The S.O.S. Band dropped a full-length record, but the electro-funk favorites continue to tour the world, garnering considerable attention overseas with the new ten disc import set "The Tabu Anthology." In fact, the group that dominated the R&B scene of the 1980s even informed a packed house at the hospitable Center For Performing Arts at Governors State University that it's currently topping the charts in the UK with "Just Get Ready," a bouncy bookend to a dance floor-flourishing career that's since been sampled by the likes of a Flo Rida/Akon/will.i.am triple team, Fatboy Slim's Beats International, Maxwell and Janet Jackson.

Armed with superb vocal form and a funky band, The S.O.S. Band addressed most of yesteryear's essential grooves with especially bountiful beats throughout "Just The Way You Like It," "Just Be Good To Me" and "Borrowed Love," all monster smashes created alongside ingenious production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In terms of the slow jams, "Weekend Girls" inspired countless couples to start dancing in the aisles, while everyone else jumped to their feet for the group's ultimate jam "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," extended by several minutes to sound extra sweet.

Speaking of hitmakers, funk/boogie band Lakeside kept the mood loose during a smoking support set carried by super-charged versions of "It's All The Way Live" and "Fantastic Voyage" (the latter of which is gaining additional life in the "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" video game). Toss it all together with an equally engaging warm-up cast led by Chante Moore, and it made for a night of soulful titans peppered with some smooth R&B all worthy of rediscovery.

Upcoming shows at the Center For Performing Arts at Governors State University include "Raisin' Cane" starring Jasmine Guy ("A Different World") on Friday, October 17 (www.centertickets.net), plus Cameo ("Word Up," "Candy"), Zapp ("More Bounce To The Ounce," "Computer Love") and comedian Joe Torry on Friday, November 28 (www.narskimusic.com)
