Review and photos by Francis Sealy

Tedeschi Trucks Band opened their fall and winter tour blazing through the Arizona heat at the outdoor stage at the Talking Stick Resort. They quietly took the stage and proceeded to play a nonstop, two-hour power set. There was very little banter, just great music.

They just finished their "Wheels of Soul Tour" and there is no rest for this band. The only thing that seems to have changed is the set list. This tour leans more on their latest album release, Let Me Get By. They still blended some cover songs and old classics with these current album selections.

The members of the band are: Susan Tedeschi, guitar and vocals, Derek Trucks, guitar, Tim Lefebvre on bass, Kofi Burbridge on keyboards and flute, Tyler Greenwood on drums, J.J. Johnson on drums, Mike Mattison on vocals, Mark Rivers on vocals, Alecia Chakour on vocals, Kebbi Williams on saxophone, Ephraim Owens on trumpet, and Elizabeth Lea on trombone. Even though the show leans heavily on Susan and Derek, each member had an opportunity to shine on solo at some point in the show and each one was a master of their instrument.

Derek's seemingly effortless guitar was a predominant presence throughout the set along with Susan's welcome vocals on all of the songs. Highlights included Kofi Burbridge's amazing flute on "I Want More," the dueling drums by Tyler and J.J. on "Idle Wind," and Ephraim Owen's trumpet on "Let's Go Get Stoned." Mike Mattison's vocal instrument was shinning throughout the night in the background, but there seemed to be a scarcity of his lead vocals on this night. All of the background singers were visually hidden behind the brass as they gave the crowd their incredible harmonies.

There were too many great performances to name them all. Don't expect the TTB shows to be the same. Don't even expect each song to be performed the same at each show. Derek Trucks has become one of the most revered guitarists today and Susan Tedeschi continues to hone her guitar skills to match Derek. It is pure pleasure to witness this band in action! TTB performed to a crowd that was only so willing to testify! At the end of the show Susan offered a simple, "See you next time." Indeed you will!
