New Politics |
Story and photos by Andy Argyrakis On any given night, Angels and Kings at Hard Rock Hotel is a hot spot in the heart of downtown Chicago, but throw in a pair of celebrity DJs for a marathon dance party, and the interest level rose all the more, as evidenced by a never-ending line wrapped around the block. As much as the nightclub has loads of appeal in the rock n' roll-tinted luxury department, chances are the main reason the masses stopped by was to catch Fall Out Boy favorite Pete Wentz spin into the wee hours.Though it would be a minute (actually many) before he hit the booth, early attendees were treated to an inventive old and new school blend from New Politics (who are also currently opening for Fall Out Boy on an extensive concert tour). The danceable alternative rock band from Denmark had everyone moving to today's beats, including Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Lorde, but also inserted a masterful variety from yesteryear, such as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five or De La Soul. While New Politics were firmly planted in pop culture past and present, Wentz's slowly marinating groove was initially met with newer selections from slightly left of the dance dial. Nonetheless, he still earned plenty of screams from the girls down front with every subtle smile, while demonstrating his affinity for today's chart-dominating ladies via spins of Icona Pop and Paramore's Hayley Williams (who also serves as a fellow tourmate this summer). |
