Otis Redding and Janis Joplin have seemingly been reincarnated in the form of the beguiling Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes. This two-night event was considered a homecoming concert since the group hails from Athens, AL. The "homies" showed up to greet "their" band and another homeboy, Patterson Hood of Drive-By Trucker fame.

Brittany Howard is the central focus of the tight band, Alabama Shakes, which was formed in 2009. Since that time they have garnered worldwide attention and buzz and played nearly every major festival in the U.S. These two nights were sold out immediately as are all their shows everywhere else on their current tour. Brittany sings and performs with a "soulfulness" that is both bewitching charisma and captivating allure. Her raw conviction and blistered vocals are delivered with a heartfelt abandon that is normally reserved in performers far beyond her twenty something years! She, within 30 minutes, was deep in her "zone" and her intense vocals were nicely asserted within the music. The bonus was that the audience was invited to transport themselves with her! Brittany's invitation was far too enticing to refuse!

There were two opening acts. Hurray For The Riff Raff, from New Orleans, which performed a 30 minute set of some likable alt-country to start the festivities. Pictured here is lead singer, Alynda Lee Segarra. The mood was set for Patterson Hood from there on. Hood is the lead singer for the band, Drive-By-Truckers and performed this night as a solo act. This was a special night for Patterson because his father was playing bass for the band and his dad killed it! Songs from Patterson's album Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance were highlighted. Hood delivered an authentic and emotional performance that really was a dual headlining performance with Alabama Shakes rather than as an opener.
