Story and photos by Joe Hargreaves Forged in some Motorcity back alley from spare parts of fastback street-rods and classic Detroit muscle, The Cobras came together and have refurbished in their own "chop-shop," a collection of some of the toughest reworked classics to come our way in some time. Vocals throttled by front-babe Rachel Nagy, alongside the souped-up rhythm riffs of Mary Ramirez, form the bands nucleus and provide the constant creative force since their genesis in 1994. Pure retro garage-band rock-and-roll Americana! It doesn't get any more authentic than this.Inspired by some of the industry's greatest soul/rock/r&b artists like Solomon Burke or Irma Thomas or Hank Ballard or Otis Redding or early "Ike years" Tina Turner, Nagy molded her voice accordingly. In an article posted on the Cobras website by Frank De Blasé, Nagy expands on her thoughts with some controversial remarks about the Turners, arguing that, for the sake of her artistic integrity, Tina never should have left the man she considers a musical genius, even given his well-documented abusive behavior. "When she left him... her songs are bullshit," she says. "Yeah, she did better than ever with them, but let's face it, those songs are stupid. 'Private Dancer'? Fuck you. That's not why God gave you that voice." Amen Sister! Not since the Blasters have I had this much fun! |
