Story and photos by Matt Schwenke While the Texas-based post-rock quartet Explosions In The Sky had scantly been heard of in Milwaukee before their previous two trips into Brew City, their sell-out of all three floors at the Pabst Theatre this time through couldn't be a better gauge of how fast the band's musical stock is rising-- they opened the show stating the last two times they played in Milwaukee there were "literally seven people" at both shows. Touring in support of their 2007 and fourth proper studio release All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, EITS have gained some added, and well-deserved, publicity after being announced as the curators of and performers in this year's All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP) festival across the pond featuring a diverse lineup-- ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Broken Social Scene, De La Soul, Dinosaur Jr., Four Tet, Ghostface Killah, Iron and Wine, The National and more.Falling somewhere between the scathing assault of the Scottish guitar army that is Mogwai and the lighter approach of prog rock newbies This Will Destroy You, instrumentalists EITS expound upon melody lines with thoughtful, unraveling transitions that are peppered with sudden rises in intensity and wandering asides. With no pronounced breaks between songs other than to tune and configure the host of pedals on stage, EITS created a setlist that relies less on the individual songs and more on the collaboration of the all songs as a whole. EITS sampled from every album in their catalog and ended the night with the powerful statement of "Only Moment We Were Alone" from the 2003 release The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place. Adding to the band's peculiarity and tradition, no encore left some in the crowd miffed, but the majority left pleasantly focused on the entire display throughout the show instead of just one song. |
