#1: Muddy Waters #2: The Kinks #3: The Jimi Hendrix Experience #4: The Beatles #5: Bob Dylan #6: Led Zeppelin #7: The Doors #8: Metallica #9: Pixies #10: Sex Pistols

Review: 1. Muddy Waters: I could make a similar argument for other blues rockers (e.g. Rob Johnson)... bottomline: blues guitarists laid the groundwork for rock in terms of sound/rhythm and even lyrics 2. The Kinks: if one looks at rock post-60's it sounds like the Kinks, not beatles. They added an edgier/harder sound to rock (they had to cut their amp with a razor!). Also were lyrical genius. 3. Jimi: he made guitars sing/burn 4. The Beatles: incredible influence on pop (what it means to be a popular influence). Popularized/set trends, such as "looking east-ward" 5 Bob: lyrical wizard that moved the folk and rock worlds closer together 6. Zeppelin: I could wax poetic about their effect on heavy metal/hard rock... but they were more than that. Experimental (Page's studio madness) and incorporative (e.g. blending in reggae). 7. The Doors: Jim Morrison was a poet who had an intimate conection with the audience. 8. Metallica: fathers of modern metal 9. Pixies: super influential on alternative rock 10 Sex Pistols: became model of punk

#1: Kraftwerk #2: Led Zeppelin #3: Elvis Presley #4: The Beatles #5: Jimi Hendrix #6: The Velvet Underground #7: David Bowie #8: Bob Dylan #9: Sex Pistols #10: The Pixies

Review: Because Kraftwerk a created whole new music genre (techno) - so did Led Zeppelin and Elvis (rock and rock 'n' roll). David Bowie, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie and Bob Dylan created amazing music and pushed their genres to the absolute limit. The Pixies and Dr Dre were good but not great in their own right.

#1: Beatles #2: Kraftwerk #3: Velvet Underground #4: Neil Young #5: Marc Bolan (T-Rex) #6: Brian Eno #7: The Doors #8: Roxy Music #9: David Bowie #10: Joy Division

Review: Marc Bolan is to me the most underrated musician of all times. Even today, an album like "The Warrior" would be an instant hit. Neil Young showed the way to indy rock, he should have been on the list. Morrison for attitude, Roxy Music and Bowie for style and Eno for ambiance!

#1: The Beatles #2: Chuck Berry #3: Bob Dylan #4: Jimi Hendrix #5: Led Zeppelin #6: The Sex Pistols #7: The Doors #8: The Rolling Stones #9: Louis Jordan #10: Black Sabbath

Review: 1. The Beatles influenced pretty much everything from the time they came out too present day. Every album was something new and something great. The group broke up before any of them turned 30 and no other artist had such an impact on music. 2. Chuck Berry was the first guitar star and his music was a perfect fit for american youth in the 1950s. With great stories such as maybellene and riffs from songs like Johnny B Goode. Chuck Berry was a major influence to groups such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys. Chuck Berry still plays today at the age Of 85. It is had to play rock music and not hear something Chuck Berry has started. 3. Bob Dylan is probably the most important songwriter in music. Tho not gifted with a great voice his incredible lyrics made up for it. Bob Dylan made such a impact by speaking of what America was go through in the 60s. Bob Dylan's words are essential to music and his songs can still relate to social problems today. I'm g! oing to skip a few but I feel it is important to mention 9. Louis Jordan was the gap between Blues and Rock and Roll. Louis Jordan played his saxophone with his Typany Five backing him up. He brought comedy and an energetic personality to the stage. Jordan's music was popular among Black an white audiences and helped bring a liking of white audiences to black artist. Jordan was a major influence to Chuck Berry, Little Richard and James Brown. It is ashame he is not that popular today but I feel he really deserves a mention as one of the most influential People in rock. Honorable Mentions: Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters, Elvis, The Doors, The Who, The Clash, Nirvana, The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd , Fleetwood Mac and Little Richard. Cant forget Leadbelly and Robert Johnson.

#1: Bob Dylan #2: The beatles #3: Chuck Berry #4: The rolling stones #5: Led zeppelin #6: Jimi hendrix #7: Elvis presley #8: Little richard #9: Buddy holly #10: Pink floyd

Review: Well Bob Dylan had influence over even the beatles. He made songwriting great and put thorough deep meaning into songs. He is the idol and primary influence of hendrix and springsteen, two top twenty artists. When bob dylan wrote like a rolling stone the beatles met up and listened to it unanimously agreeing they could not do anything like it. The greatest musician ever.

#1: The Beatles #2: Jimmi Hendrix #3: Frank Zappa #4: Led Zeppelin #5: King Crimson #6: Rolling Stones #7: Elvis Presley #8: Allman Brothers #9: Pink Floyd #10: Bob Dylan

Review: Well... def a tough one but Beatles marked the era, as you mentioned I must demote a bit the King Presley cause the compositional aspect, You did miss Zappa which is surprising, I think its underrated and under appreciated, its a top 3 for sure, Crimson's proposition is just an academic mayhem at this point to me as I keep finding more and more in their work! Hendrix is the best guitar soloist of all times, but Zappa is second... no doubt in my mind, The Stones are like the Beatles without the hype that ultimately killed them in History, Duane Allman has the best country rock I can think of, in terms of execution is severely taxing... Floyd.. well Its Floyd! the progressive contribution is there and Dylan... well stoner poet beloved... creativity... I need more space to elaborate... My humble scholar opinion, def biased by my taste of coure Review: I like my picks!

Review: It?s more a personal top ten than a general. Each of these bands has influenced me to my own unique sound. Without number 3, I would never had thought of picking up a guitar, without number 4, 5, 6, I would never be able to write good lyrics, and without number 1, I would never had found the most brilliant musician ever! #1: Rod Stewart #2: Queen #3: David Bowie #4: The Who #5: Rolling Stones #6: Billy Joel #7: Bob Dylan #8: Genesis #9: Yardbirds #10: Muddy Waters

Review: Muddy Waters and others around that time were the roots of music as we know it, but failed to reach a wide enough audience to have an immediate impact, then, people such as Dylan made the music more accessible and relevant to the average person. This inspired many bands such as the Yardbirds (where Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page all rose to prominence and consequently the band was the main foundation for Led Zeppelin), other bands that emerged at this time include, perhaps most famously, the Who and the Rolling Stones. These bands innovated greatly with both original work and by updating older music (such as by Muddy Waters)and have become archetypes for rock bands. On top of being one of biggest examples and influences, both bands are still active in the music scene. Thanks to both the Who and the Rolling Stones having paved the way, even more bands began to gain popularity, an example being Queen. They are responsible for a lot of technical accomplishments!

in music and helped add a level of sophistication to music that embellished the intellectual side as opposed to just emotions and political statements which were the main subjects that mainstream music had until that point been a vehicle for. All four members of Queen had a self-penned hit and their attention to detail was highly inspiring to other musicians. Also, they are widely credited as having established the music video as a promotional tool. At around the same time, talents such as Billy Joel and Genesis were also establishing themselves and both have achieved considerable chart success. These people seemingly churned out hits and made the music reach people's subconscious so that even to this day (often around thirty or more years after a song's initial release) radio stations dedicated to 'popular music' continue to play them. Following the work of those before them, they made full use of their resources to create music that would encourage people to dig deeper and embrace all that has come before.

Returning back to after the Who and Rolling Stones had been founded but Queen were yet to form, another artist named David Bowie began making his way in music. Bowie proved inspirational and influential to all and, indeed, one of the most iconic musicians of all time. With his chameleon-like skills at changing his image and his (originally) non-commercial approach to music, many people became fascinated with him and, after his hit with 'Space Oddity', he grew to earn a loyal following of fans as well as many others who appreciated at least a portion of his musical ventures. He followed in the Rolling Stones' and the Who's development of stage presence and added a further visual element in his costumes (he would also become one of the 'glam rockers' along with musicians such as Queen and T. Rex). Finally, Rod Stewart possesses all of the successful traits of other musicians and makes them his own. Not only has he stood the test of time, garnering his first number one in 1971 with 'Maggie May' (in addition, this made him the first artist in history to ever have a number on single on both the British and US charts simultaneously)and still successfully releasing new studio albums (the most recent being in 2010) that continually enter the Billboard album charts within the top five spots, but also being one of the most popular live acts. His ability to sell-out arenas even when album sales were *relatively* poor enabled him to retain the interest of his core fan base and gain new followers at the same time, likewise, his tours are consistently some of the most successful - even compared to modern acts - and his concerts remain fully sold-out. This is understandable considering his natural showmanship which has not diminished with age, the natural part referring to his lack of need for backing dancers, outrageous costumes, choreography, etcetera to make a show visually stunning. Yet another source of Rod Stewart's appeal is his ability to flit effortlessly between musical styles (such as blues with the Jeff Beck Group, folk on early solo albums!, rock a nd roll with the Faces, disco in a selfless move to introduce more people to rock music, american standards and so on). Obviously, his unique voice is a major attraction for many people but the technical aspects of his singing (such as diction, elocution, phrasing, dynamics, etcetera) are formidable and matched by few (who invariably are lacking in other areas). This is also coupled with both his own songwriting talent and his amazing ability to cover songs and make them his own, more often than not eclipsing the original in quality. He has a solid understanding of the music business itself and is willing to promote his material so that it can reach a wide variety of audiences, this also meant that in the late seventies and early eighties he was one of the few artists making promotional videos for numerous songs, even before the start of MTV. In conclusion of this (but not of all points that can be written) he has maintained his image and not succumbed to drug or alcohol addictions like many of his peers, he is a good judge of certain situations which means he acts appropriately and therefore ultimately comes out on top.

Indeed, there are many important musicians and the ones I have mentioned have many further merits that I have not even begun to cover. I have but scratched the surface.

Peace and respect, may the Mighty Power of Rock And Roll live on and thanks for reading.

#1: Bob Dylan #2: The Beatles #3: Elvis Presley #4: The Rolling Stones #5: David Bowie #6: Jimi Hendrix #7: The Velvet Underground #8: Bruce Springsteen #9: The Ramones #10: Eddie van Halen

Review: Frankly, as influential as the Beatles are, they wouldn't even exist like they do today if it weren't for Dylan. Young Dylan and the other members of the folk movement influenced Lonnie Donegan and the skiffle movement in Britain, which inspired John Lennon to pick up a guitar. Also, the Ramones are the real ones who started the punk movement, not the Sex Pistols. Johnny Rotten heard Joey Ramone's stuff and decided to follow. Also, I find it quite odd that you would leave out the Stones and Springsteen. I don't know anyone that would consider Dr. Dre more influential than either Bruce or Mick Jagger.

Review: James Brown because there is no other single greater performer in the history of ROCK-N-ROLL due to his style ,his original dance move's and his unorthodox beat which would later influence Michael Jackson ,Prince ,John Cougar mellen camp,Echo in the bunnymen, David Bowie,Aerosmith,Queen,Chic,Smashing Pumpkins,Parliment & Funkadelic,Tina Turner,The Rolling Stones (remember I'll go crazy), Fela,Jimmy Page,Bootsy Collins, everybody in hip hop, not to mention he sung back up for little richard and is responsible for the foundation of FUNK,HIP HOP,SOUL, Afro Beat,GO -GO music, and high energy on stage. There is is no one in the history of american popular music that comes close to Mr.Brown as far as influence goes.the only reason James Brown didn't sell more record's then Elvis because he was Black ,can you image how big James brown would have been if he were white in the 1950's & 60's.

Review: I think it's obvious the 2 greatest influences were the Beatles and Dylan. Not only did they change the musical landscape the changed the entire social landscape of the 60's. The Beatles revolutionized recording and Dylan revolutionized song writing. Chuck Berry because he basically created rock and roll. Elvis because he brought black music to a white audience. Hendrix set the bar for the lead guitar the heart and soul of electric music. The Velvet Underground because they were the original punk band. The Rolling Stones because they were and still are the greatest performing band ever. Bob Marley because he was possessed by the spirit of Jah David Bowie the king of Glam. And finally RunDMC because they brought Rap into the mainstream.

#1: The Beatles #2: Bob Dylan #3: The Rolling Stones #4: The Beach Boys #5: Led Zeppelin #6: The Velvet Underground #7: The Wailers #8: Litlle Richard #9: Muddy Waters #10: The Clash

Review: The Beatles were the first rock/pop group to define the genre, which has lasted up to the modern day. Bob Dylan was the beat poet, folk singer, and personality that inspired so many and showed the world that you didn't need looks or the voice to do Rock 'n' Roll. He was also a genius. The Rolling Stones defined the genre for what it was as well, second only to the Fab Four, their attitude, songwriting, and instrumental prowess brought them their fame. The Beach Boys were another early outfit that seemed to be the only American group who could challenge the Beatles in the pop writing category. The competition that ensued between the two groups brought about some of the greatest works of popular music ever recorded in Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds. Led Zeppelin were the hard rock band to end all hard rock bands.

The Velvet Underground were the band that invented alternative music. Bob Marley and The Wailers too, spread reggae influence across the world and put Jamaica on the map. Little Richard was the first mainstream rock 'n' roll musician, doing the thing as early as 1951/52 and profoundly influenced acts such as Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. Muddy Waters was the staple blues man. And the Clash were the greatest punk band that ever existed because they transcended the genre.

#1: Beatles #2: Elvis Presley #3: Bob Dylan #4: Rolling Stones #5: Chuck Berry #6: Led Zeppelin #7: Jimi Hendrix #8: Little Richard and Buddy Holly #9: Queen #10: Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis

Review: 10.Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis are on my list because they were rockin' back in 1949 and 1950. Take that, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Buddy Holly, the 4 people generally claimed to have invented rock! 9.Queen is oddly omitted from your list, if there's 1 band that everybody knows a song by, it's Queen. 8.Little Richard and Buddy Holly make the list for their importance to the arcchitecture of rock 'n' roll. I can't believe you didn't list Buddy Holly as an influence on The Beatles, Dylan or Elvis. 7.While I think Black Sabbath really invented metal as we know it, Hendrix was arguably the first hard rocker, although some would argue that The Stones were. 6.Zeppelin were probably the most important ''roots of metal'' band, and for that reason I put them at #6. 5.Chuck Berry is an unforgivable omission, as he was probably the most important of the group of artists who invented rock. the top 4 pretty much speak for themselves.

#1: Charley Patton #2: Chuck Berry #3: The Beatles #4: Prince

Review: These are the four people who influenced, invented, and changed pop music as we know it today. Charley Patton is the first recorded blues artist (Jelly Roll played jazz). Chuck brought rock to the mainstream. The Beatles are the blueprint for every band who was a contemporary or who followed. Prince invented modern pop rock.

#1: Bob Dylan #2: Robert Johnson #3: Elvis Pressley #4: The Beatles #5: Jimi Hendrix #6: The Velvet Underground #7: Otis Redding #8: Bob Marley #9: David Bowie #10: Run DMC

Review: Dylan has to be number one. I think he is the most covered songwriter ever. Robert Johnson brought the Delta Blues to England which in turn changed the lives of Clapton, Lennon, et al. Presley, of course, kept the blues on the home front and influenced an entire generation. The Beatles made pop profitable. Hendrix tweaked the blues and melded the psychedelic sounds of the 60s. Lou Reed made heroin addiction a stage show and may have sparked the punk scene. Otis, like Johnson, took blues, jazz, and pop to a new level. Marley gave the Third World a political voice. Bowie let the freaks all know they had a champion. and without Run DMC the rap movement might have stayed on the street corners of Philly.

#1: Robert Johnson #2: Buddy Holly #3: Chuck Berry #4: Bob Dylan #5: The Beatles #6: The Velvet Underground #7: David Bowie #8: Tom Waits #9: Radiohead #10: U2

Review: Robert Johnson was the iconic, mythical character that immortalized that unique American creation--the blues. People like Buddy and Chuck took that and realized new horizons and sounds. Bob Dylan added the depth of tapping and then lyricising a social consciousness through fusing heartland folk and rock. The Beatles then solidified that concept as a commerical mainstream possibility. After a pinnacle of achievement, The Velvet Underground deconstructs all that we though we had built so beautifully, leading Bowie and others to pick up those pieces and craft new art. Enter Tom Waits, who pulls everything America has offered to the art of music and concocts tapestries of majesty in its honor. Finally, in our modern times, for better or for worse, Radiohead and U2' s contribution to the complexity and gravity of the contemporary pop and rock sound cannot be understated, like 'em or hate 'em.

If you do some research you will find the same, And hairstyle is not influence, otherwise It can be also said Elvis had influenced chuck berry. Beatles low influence is really damn overrated!
Elvis has influenced many of the above like The Kinks, The Beatles, Jimi hendrix, Bob dylan, The Whom(only roger daltery), The Byrds etc.
Why you have wrote soo much ridiculous for "Elvis impersonators"??? By calling "lounge lizards" and more crap? By 2002 there were over 85k impersonators of him, So edit it.

Review: Pink floyd, just because they cover all aspects and feelings of life, more so than the beatles. Not the most influential, but definately the most beautiful for me. The beatles and Led Zep. is self explanitory. I thought bob dylan was simply the best solo artist ever. The rolling stones were long lasting classics, though i admire their obsecure stuff. The who was different and unique. Jimi hendrix was the god of guitar and had a great great potential. U2 is still out there and has to be the longest lasting band out there. The Clash were gods of punk. And doors were an influential and great rock band.

Review: the beatles because they defined modern pop and were "bigger than jesus" as john lennon said. the velvet underground started grunge style music which they evolved from the music made by artists such as led zeppelin and they influenced some of the greatest artists of the century including david bowie robert johnson simply because without hime the stones would have never got together and as robert plant said "without him we never would have been here" he influenced a whole generation of music bob dylan because of his brilliant songwriting that has been covered by so many other bands and his vocal genious jimi hendrix because he was the one who made the guitar the most important instrument in rock chuck berr because he virtually founded rock and roll, some may argue elvis did but chuck was first david bowie because he influenced the many movements he was ia large amount eg he put the glam in glam rock led zeppelin because they started metal and without them we might not have bands such as nirvana and rage against Pink Floyd because thay were the first ones to put industrial sounds into there music which would later influence kraftwerk and man other electronic bands and because they were the most influential progressive band Ramones simply because along lou reed and the velvet undergorund they started punk

#1: The Beatles #2: Bob Dylan #3: Elvis Presley #4: Chuck Berry #5: James Brown #6: Ray Charles #7: Bob Marley #8: Led Zeppelin #9: Robert Johnson #10: The Velvet Underground

Review: Let me get this straight, clearly I see a few people not knowing what the word "influence" means. I see too many metalheads putting too many metal artists on this list. Most of them suck with absolutely no originality, greatness, and clearly no influence. So I made this list grading artists strictly on their influence and impact on music. Screw the rock artists only rule, I'm just putting the top 10 most influential artists of all time.
The Beatles: Music could only be described as before and after The Beatles. They changed everything about everything.
Followers: Just about everyone that came after them.
Bob Dylan: He could have been more influential than the Beatles. Dylan managed to make music more than just entertainment. He made music deep, meaningful, and made it a way to deliver a message. Anyone who puts meaning into their music were influenced by Dylan. Anyone who puts any thought into lyrics were influenced by Dylan. Anyone who wrote about social issues were influenced by Dylan. Anyone who wrote a song that's about SOMETHING were influenced by Dylan.
Followers: Neil Young, The Byrds, The Beatles, The Animals, Bruce Springsteen, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, David Bowie, Van Morrison, The Velvet Underground, Joni Mitchell, The Band, Tom Petty, The Clash, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, Pink Floud, Johnn Lennon...
Elvis Presley: Before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything. The King revolutionized music and entertainment and inspired millions of youngsters to start playing rock 'n' roll. He created the attitude, image, and sound of rock.
Followers: Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, T. Rex, David Bowie, any artist wearing tight clothing.
Chuck Berry: Though not as famous as Elvis, his influence on music is none less. He created the lyrics and guitar riffs that were so frequently used in rock. The reason why the guitar became a dominate instrument in rock was because of Chuck Berry. So if this guy never existed, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton would have never soloed on their guitars.
Followers: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Who, The Velvet Underground, and any artist that had guitar solos.
James Brown: Godfather of funk, not only that but he had influence in soul, R&B, and even hip-hop. He also pushed the limits of what live performances can be.
Followers: Earth Wind and Fire, Prince, Michael Jackson, Sly Stone, George Clinton, Parliament/Funkadelic, and every hip-hop artist who sampled from him.
Ray Charles: Inventor of R&B, that's all I have to say.
Followers: Anyone who sang R&B or soul.
Led Zeppelin: By using heavier guitar riffs influenced by the blues and louder volume. They created hard rock and heavy metal, two of the most dominating genres in pop today.
Followers: Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen, Queen, Rush, Journey, any hard rock/metal band formed in the 70's.
Robert Johnson: If you looked at the roots of all genres of music, they can all be traced back to the blues. Just like Slash of Guns N' Roses (pay attention metalheads) said "rock is just a faster paced version of the blues."
Followers: Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, every blues musician + Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and all those blues-based metal bands.
The Velvet Underground: They created punk, so anytime you hear a song that's about drugs, sex, or some other awkward subject, they were probably involved.

#1: KISS #2: Elvis #3: The Beatles #4: Led Zeppelin #5: Jimi Hendrix #6: AC/DC #7: The WHO #8: Van Halen #9: The Rolling Stones #10: Chuck Berry

Review: 1.KISS was more influential than people realize! In the 70's, they were pronounced the world's most popular band, They have not only sold a lot of music, but all kinds of merchandise, their guitarist (Ace Frehley), has influenced a lot of the younger guitarists of the 90's thru present day! Gene Simmons helped give rock a demonic yet sexual look with his long tongue. Not to mention the obvious influence they gave on Glam Rock, the 80's wouldn't of been the 80's without these four demonic Knights. In. Satans. Service. 2.Obviously Elvis is kinda what started rock when he shook those hips and got all naughty for the girls in the 50's. 3.The Beatles were to the sixties what Elvis was to the 50's the girls just couldn't get enough. 4. Led Zeppelin was the first band to really break the blues from rock and just create a thing called Hard Rock. 5. Jimi Hendrix helped bring more talent to guitar players of his era and started the whole drugs scene to Rock. 6. AC/DC is an obvious! All kinds of people today wear shirts with their logo, they've become a new fashion thing. And there music is great. 7. The WHO in a way were like the Beatles, they Helped make rock a wild and crazy thing in the 60's with Pete Townsend jumping while playing guitar, and Keith Moon acting High while playing the drums, they were Freaky Naughty! 8. Van Halen has to make the list, They helped bring the whole L.A. Sexual druggy look to hard rock in the 80's, And their guitarist Eddy was sicko good. 9. The Rolling Stones have so many hit songs that they had to of influenced many with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, who are still to this day very popular. 10. #1: the beatles #2: elvis presley #3: bob dylan #4: jimi hendrix #5: led zeppelin

Review: beatles - well said before, textbook answer elvis - "before elvis there was nothing" bob dylan - the best artist to come out of the states after elvis jimi hendrix - no jimmy page, no eric clapton, no sweet riff making music led zeppelin - how can someone write stairway to heaven and not be influential. david bowie is crap, i think led zeppelin should take his place

#1: The Beatles #2: Led Zeppelin #3: The Who #4: Jimi Hendrix #5: Bob Dylan #6: The Rolling Stones #7: Pink Floyd #8: Black Sabbath #9: The Byrd's #10: The Velvet Underground

Review: The Beatles are the band most responsible for establishing the British Invasion and making the rock group bigger than the solo act in rock music. The Beatles are the band who ushered in the classic rock era and the group most responsible for transforming rock and roll into rock music
