Story and photos by Kate Seesholtz Singer/songwriters Josh Kelley and Ryan Cabrera brought their "Tell it Like it Is" tour to Nashville's Exit/In Monday evening. The evening was not a typical co-headlining show, Kelley and Cabrera traded off playing songs and backed each other up while the other performed. Josh Kelley kicked off the evening with his song "Two Cups of Coffee" while Ryan Cabrera chose his song, "Say" to warm the crowd up.Kelley and Cabrera are truly songwriters in their purest form. Each song they performed had a personal story behind it that they did not hesitate to share with the audience. Whether it was Cabrera letting the crowd know he had cheated on a girlfriend with her best friend in the song "Enemies" ("the truth is maybe I wanna get caught"), or Kelley's song "Just Say the Word" that offers support to an ex girlfriend, the duo shared honesty in their lyrics. For a portion of the show each singer was left alone with just his acoustic guitar. The intimate setting allowed the girls in the audience to be mesmerized by Cabrera's radio hit "True," as they sang along to every word. Kelley chose to play a recently penned song to be recorded by a friend in the audience, entitled "Gone Like That." The time alone on stage allowed each singer to personally connect with the audience while showcasing their humor and passion for their craft. As the evening winded down Kelly showed his strong vocal talent on his hit "Amazing," while Cabrera brought the energy up with "On the Way Down." The show ended with the duo playing the title track from their tour, and recently debuted single, "Tell it Like it Is." The song is a great combination of Kelley and Cabrera's voices. With the way they worked off each other, one would think they had been playing together for a lifetime. |
