With fireworks bursting over the Riviera and the smells of summer fare drifting through the lakefront air, it only seemed fitting to hear the sounds of hometown favorite Martha Berner at the 46th annual Venetian Festival. With full band in support, the singer/songwriter delivered the well-worn toe-tapper "Dear Franklin" to get the crowd's feet moving early, while "Ten Tiny Little Pieces" was delivered with such moist textures and effortless power in voice it produced an arresting, shoe-gazing response.
As Berner continued to unveil altered and enhanced takes on her older material, the show was peppered with thought-provoking new material that left a well-seasoned taste of things to come while still feeling satisfied with what has already been so appetizing.
