Review and photos by Mary Andrews "Lady Day" has never sounded so sweet on this sizzling night. This was the fourth Tucson appearance for the American jazz singer, songwriter and guitarist. Peyroux was backed up by a larger than normal ensemble including three violinists borrowed from the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. Her veteran band members gave us flawless, delicious solos that complemented Madeleine as well. The tour is showcasing her latest album, The Blue Room, produced by Larry Klein. The album celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic Ray Charle's country and western albums, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Volumes 1 & 2. But The Blue Room offers more than Ray Charles Songs and tonight was no exception! Peyroux has long been compared to Billie Holiday. This is partially due to her interpretations of classic songs, but also due to the timbre of her voice. She started singing as a child and her experience includes being a street singer in Paris. Her delivery appeared to be effortless. Peyroux's voice has never sounded more nuanced and fluid. Her brilliant reading of "Leonard Cohen's "Bird On A Wire" garnered a standing ovation. "Bravo, Madeleine" was shouted from the audience. Madeleine's sense of humor was present throughout her live performance. She mentioned that it would be nice to have an adobe house in Tucson. Someone in the audience said, "I have one I can sell you." She laughed and replied, "I can't even afford a tour bus. We are staying at a hotel on highway 10. It's closed on the weekends." The performance was on a Saturday night. |
