Story and photos by Kate Seesholtz Grace Potter and the Nocturnals brought their kicked up rock to a pair of nights at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium. Rocking a tiny mini dress and skyscraper tall heels, Potter and her band led the audience through a whirlwind of high-energy hits.While it may seem that Grace Potter and her band have just suddenly burst onto the scene, the Vermont group has been captivating crowds since the early 2000's. While they have been used to playing Nashville's smaller venues, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals had no problem fully selling out one of the nights. Potter and her band took the audience through her musical catalog, keeping things mostly upbeat and wild. The band opened with their recent "Paris (Oh La La)." Grace Potter often danced about the stage, flipping her long blonde hair at every chance. The stunning lead singer showcased instrumental as well as vocal talent, grabbing a tambourine one moment before pounding at her piano's keys the next, then switching back to rock out on the guitar. Her band, The Nocturnals, kept things moving with extended intros and soaring solos, allowing them to show that this was not just a solo act. The biggest surprise of the evening came when Potter introduced country music star Kenny Chesney to sing their duet "You and Tequila.'" The audience was also lucky enough to get to hear songwriter Matraca Berg join them. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals ended the night with an extended encore, seeming to try and soak in every last moment of the evening. In a world full of manufactured popstars and one hit wonders, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have proven that women can be rock sensations. |
