They change the dynamic and tempo to contrast just how unbelievably intense they can get. Anyone who got restless or impatient during the slower parts of the concert should not have wasted the space at a sold out show. They are either not accepting of The Mars Volta's softer side...are music's softer side in general...or they snorted too much coke before the show. TMV covers the whole spectrum, as thunderously energetic as they can be, they can be just as beautifully mellow. You don't have to like this, just respect the talent that has sold out shows across the board with one f*ckin song on the radio. It is their live performance that has earned such a following. Please be assured that over my 45 years I have seen my share of live music. I love live performance and all types of adventurous music. It is a passion and I spend a good deal of money indulging my love for music and performance. The three of us are in agreement that this show was one of the most enjoyable experiences for any of us EVER. TMV is the King Crimson of your generation, although I doubt that many of you can fully appreciate the comparison. "Undirected compulsions.” Hardly. It is these improvised “moments” where the music/performance is truly stunning. The audient should fell privileged to be awarded the opportunity to experience such events firsthand. I have always explained to my kids that, for me, I live for the “moments” experienced in music and performance. That is why I can usually find something to like with just about any band or performer. Most have their moments wher! e it all comes together sonically, emotionally, visually, juxtaposed in time to the listeners’ experience. It is sad to me really how so many so-called reviewers actually denigrate the very art they purport to admire. How convenient (for you) that you would have them package their art more to your liking. Compact and homogenize the musical journey so it fits your time frame, your limited experience, your limited knowledge base, your indifference and your intolerance.
