I wouldn't say I was disappointed by the set list . . . my favorite songs were not played. I love Optimistic and High and Dry and Exit Music and none of those were played. I felt the whole concert was an emotional release. Time stood still as Thom's passionate words floated into everyone's accepting ears. The show seemed short, but they offered two hours of solid music for all of us, and that is a wonderful gift. Seeing them for even a second would be miraculous. I can't wait to see them again. I liked all the music from "Hail", and was really impressed at what a great job they did recreating the complex textures in the live venue. In fact, there was one track from that CD I wish they would have played: A Wolf at the Door, one of my favorites of the whole album. I also didn't think anything went on too long. For me, these guys can play as long as they feel like it! I am a 20-year+ professional musician, and this concert was one of the best musical experiences of my life. The band had a very high level of energy and intensity from the outset, and as Tony Bonyata pointed out, at times Yorke's dance and chant resembled an out of body experience. It reminded me of the religious rhythmic dance trances that often took over jazz pianist Thelonious Monk while he was playing. Johnny Greenwood was very impressive. Its one thing to listen to Radiohead CD's and imagine how he is able to shape the music into the multiple facets it exposes (futuristic and spacey, guitar driven, electronic and jungle).. It is another to see it happen live and realtime... He picked up no less than 5 instruments (maybe more) and not only proved to be the ultimate utilitarian musician, but was the spotlighted instrument with every one he touched (guitar, keyboard, organ, sampler, xylophone, and what sounded like a theremine). There were two very minor dings in my experience. The first had a bit to do with the venue and a bit to do with my own selfishness. Next time I dont want to share this with 20,000 (or more) people. I flew and drove over 1100 miles to get there and I ended up not really being able to see much of the stage and having to watch the video screens, albeit one of the most interesting light shows I've seen. Alpine Valley's stage is in a pit and the lawn seats offer no kind of view. I am 6'2, and saw only the back of the stage (Phil Selway's head). My shorter friends, unfortunately, just saw the screens. The second coulda-shoulda relates to the length of the show. They played 23 songs and for nearly 2 hours, but what shows end at 10:00? on a Saturday? in the summer? I could have stood for the show being twice as long. There was so much traffic, it was after midnight before we even got in the car. But as I said, it was an overall incredible experience and I would do it again a! nd again, and plan to. I might just get there a little earlier than two hours before the show next time. There was a lot of socializing before the show so i missed the Von Borings (sniff) who since have changed their name to Rich Kids United. Again, socializing during Sonic Youth but the music was good background noise. Then the experience i never thought would happen, 30 years after their last album, the Stooges came on. If only the crowd would have responded to Iggy's chant of "Riot" . Well i tried my best to stir something up and got kicked out during "1970", which was about the third song from the last so i caught most of the show. If there was any show to be kicked out of this was it. The real beauty of it all was i entered the show with those free tickets from a gas station having to pay only three dollars. After numerous cans of alcofuel myself and some upstarts assembled around twelve of us to bum rush the show past the obese and/or matronly security. I succeeded along with a handful of others and ended up i! n the second row from the stage. We all stood on the seats to get as close to Iggy as possible but the security didn't understand and neither did i when told to sit down. Protest led to one of my favorite shirts being ripped up as that was the only thing they could keep a hold of. Alas,the crowd was too thick and apprehended again i was escorted out by two Oakland County occifers. It was great to hear another opinion of the blackout especially since i drove down that night and experienced it by myself. Also, i am from Flint and everyone should experience Angelos Coney Island, with three locations to serve you. Overall the Stooges did not disappoint. Lastly, thanks for the Miller lite Tony!!!
