Story and photos by Kate Seesholtz

Train started off their sold out show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium by reminding the audience just why they are still topping the charts over a decade since their start. They opened with radio staples "Meet Virginia" and "Get to Me." And those first songs were all it took to capture the crowd.

The night focused highly on audience participation. Train has learned that if you don't love your fans, they won't love you back. As they moved into their fourth song of the evening, lead singer Pat Monahan pulled a few very young fans up onto the stage. They were obviously star-struck as they watched their idol sing to them. Encouragement to sing along was also given throughout the evening. As Train introduced their newest single, "If It's Love," the words scrolled across the screen behind them, turning the auditorium into a giant karaoke party.

The evening also had its serious moments. As the band prepared to play their hit, "When I Look to the Sky," Monahan explained that it was one of the most important songs they had ever written; he then dedicated it to the country's military families. The crowd was brought to silence as Monahan stepped away from the microphone, allowing just the power of his voice to carry the words.

Train closed out the evening with their current chart topper, "Hey Soul Sister." The song brought everyone to their feet, dancing and singing word for word. As the band returned for their encore, they thrilled with "Drops of Jupiter" and the appropriate "Dance the Night Away," which opening act Butch Walker joined them for.
