Story and photos by Phil Bonyata Frank Zappa's three decades long musical legacy is set in stone albeit with a sound that is more suited to a music loving alien world. His fans are primarily intelligent males (maybe with a few too many zits) who feel safer on the fringe where being different is cool. Now some 15 years after Zappa's death his son Dweezil has decided to take a crack at his father's musical arsenal of weirdness. What is remarkable is how well Frank's son has mastered his father's daunting work.Setting up camp at Summerfest's Potawatomi Stage, Dweezil and his more-than-able band of merrymen blew the coffin lid off of his dad's most seminal work. Dweezil, wearing a "Freak Out" t-shirt and jeans, slowly raised the tempo to a stinging fury on "Imaginary Diseases." Zappa flawlessly played his father's intricate guitar work with an apparent intimate understanding while shining moments of original improv took shape as well. "Beautiful Guy" and "Beauty Knows No Pain" had singer Ray White, who toured with Frank in the '70s and '80s, interpreting Zappa's lyrics with a rich and deep soulfulness. "Bamboozled By Love" found White and Dweezil trading fiery barbs on guitar while letting their jazz inluences richly bleed through. Dweezil's talent on guitar is amazing - adeptly interpreting his father's work on "Joe's Garage," "Magic Fingers" and "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes" with this scatologically infectious chorus: Im gonna ram it, ram it, ram it Ram it up yer poop chute Corn hole Ram it, ram it, ram it Ram it up yer poop chute Fist fuck Ram it, ram it, ram it Ram it up yer poop chute Wrist-watch; crisco Ram it, ram it, ram it Ram it up yer poop chute Pud! Closing their incendiary set with "Willie the Pimp" and "Cosmik Debris," Dweezil and folks closed their eyes and let their inner weirdness rule the night. |
