Review and photos by Jennifer Bronenkant On the first of a two night sold out run at at Northern Lights Theater, Gregg Allman treated the audience to a night of greatest hits of both the Allman Brothers Band and his solo career. He opened the night on his Hammond B-3 organ starting with what could be considered his theme song, "I'm No Angel" and continued on with playing the organ on "Statesboro Blues" and "Please Call Home."Stepping out front to play guitar for "Trouble No More" gave the audience a chance better see his interplay with the rest of the band. Allman generously shares the spotlight with all members of the band by stepping back to feature the other musicians often during the show. The Gregg Allman Band is always made up of musician's musicians and the current band is no exception. The current touring group includes six members in addition to Allman: Scott Sharrard on guitar, Jerry Jemmott on bass, Ben Stivers on keyboard, Steve Potts on drums, Jay Collins on flute and sax, and Marc Quinones on percussion. The love of the music is clearly the driving force for all here as the joy felt in making music infused the air infecting all in the room. Surprisingly, the band only performed "I Can't Be Satisfied" from Allman's most recent album Low Country Blues (2011). The rocking finish to the set "Love Like Kerosene" by guitarist and Milwaukee native Sharrard was the only other number not from the Allman history of hits. But no matter, you can't go wrong giving the audience the greatest hits from a career like this. |
