Story and Photos by Joe Hargreaves Despite high gas prices and the fact that Summerfest is going on at the lakefront, John Hiatt faired well in filling up the Pabst Theater Friday night. He graciously thanked those in attendance for spending entertainment dollars to join him and his new band "The Ageless Beauties" for a night of fellowship and beer.Through his raspy-throated vocals, Hiatt strung together a wonderful set, filling the theater with familiar sounds of love and heartache, connecting with the contradiction between bubbly melodies and sadness. "Cry Love" may have garnered the nights first of many standing ovations, but what stole the show was the building crescendo in "Feels Like Rain," where his percussionist filled appropriate ambiance by brushing rain on the high-hat, behind John scatting pitter-patter before howling - with arms raised - how much it feels like rain. He then progressed with "Tennessee Plates" and closed the show with "Memphis in the Meantime" - which brought everyone to their feet and kept them there for the duration of the two-song encore. With aisles now filled by those caught up in the energy, they danced out their appreciation to "The Tiki Bar is Open" and the night's closer - "Thing Called Love." A truly amazing performance from one of the greatest songwriters of our time. |
